Let’s Celebrate Costa Rica’s Independence Day! / ¡Celebremos el Día de la Independencia de Costa Rica!

September 15, 1821.

This date is not just a celebration for the people of Costa Rica, but for all of Central America. Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) won its independence from Spain when representatives of the remaining provinces found out that Mexico and other South American territories had achieved their sovereignty and decided to fight.

The Torch of Liberty is a symbol of independence for Central American people. The torch is lit and taken on a multi-national treck from the capital of Guatemala to Cartago, Costa Rica, totaling 1,475 kilometers (917 miles). The torch is carried by highly-academic and physically-fit students, that belong to both private and public high schools. In a fifty-seven year old tradition, others accompany the runners, following along on bicycles, motorcycles and in cars.

With the arrival of the Torch of Liberty to Costa Rica on September 13, on the 14th we celebrate the Lanterns Parade at 6pm in schools and central parks of each city. This tradition began in Guatemala when the townspeople met in the square in front of the City Hall and shouted in one voice, “Long Live the Fatherland,” “Long Live Liberty.” The lanterns are designed by schoolchildren, decorated with patriotic symbols like ox carts, purple orchids, traditional colonial houses and torches, and some are made of recycled materials.

The best celebration is the “September 15th Parade.” On this day in the morning, students and citizens join in a civic act to sing the Costa Rican national anthem and the Independence Day song. In each town you can participate in a variety of cultural  activities as well as the parade. Middle school and high school bands adorn the streets  in their colorful and patriotic costumes, and jubilant spectators watch with excitement.

That’s how we celebrate the liberty, peace, and sovereignty of Costa Rica!

15 de Setiembre de 1821.

Esta fecha es una celebración no solo del pueblo costarricense, sino de toda Centroamérica. La Independencia Centroamericana (Guatemala, el Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica) de España, se hace realidad tras la lucha de los representantes de las provincias, tras enterarse de que México y otros pueblos suramericanos habían logrado su soberanía.

Un símbolo de independencia para los pueblos centroamericanos, es La Antorcha de la Libertad. Ésta es encendida e inicia su recorrido desde el 1 de setiembre, saliendo de la Capital de Guatemala hasta Cartago en Costa Rica y completando un recorrido de aproximadamente 1.475 KM. La antorcha es llevada por estudiantes de un alto desempeño académico y  físico, que pertenecen tanto a colegios públicos como a colegios privados. En una tradición que tiene ya 57 años, las personas han acompañado a la antorcha en su recorrido usando sus bicicletas, motocicletas o en vehículo.

Con la llegada de la Antorcha de la Libertad a Costa Rica el 13 de Setiembre, el 14  se realiza el “Desfile de Faroles” a las 6pm en las Escuelas y parques centrales de cada ciudad. Esta tradición nace en Guatemala cuando el pueblo reunido en la plaza frente al Cabildo gritaba a una sola voz: “viva la patria”, “viva la libertad”. Los faroles son diseñados por los niños en las escuelas, muchos con diseños de símbolos patrios como: carretas, guarias moradas, casas típicas o antorchas y algunos elaborados con materiales reciclados.

La mayor celebración es el “Desfile del 15 de Setiembre”. En este día se realiza un acto cívico en la mañana donde se reúnen estudiantes y ciudadanos para entonar el himno nacional de Costa Rica y el himno de la Independencia. Se presentan actos culturales que fortalecen el valor cívico y se lleva a cabo el desfile. En éste participan las bandas estudiantiles de escuelas y colegios, quienes con sus mejores galas llenas y colores patrios, engalanan las calles, llenas de espectadores alegres y jubilosos.

Happy Childrens’ Day – Feliz Dia del Niño

The little ones in the house are very happy, anxiously awaiting a special date, September 9, because it’s the celebration of little boys and little girls in Costa Rica. Likewise, many adults with their inner child alive and well also like to celebrate this day.

 On this special day, centers of education prepare an incredible day of fun for the little ones. Cultural and recreational activities are organized so that the kids can show off and have fun, dancing, laughing, playing games and smiling. And do you know what is the best part of this day? Yes, the sweets! The icecreams, bags of treats cake and best of all, presents!

 With a day like this full of candies and being spoiled, wouldn’t you like to be a kid your whole life? Well I would! And clearly if you check your Facebook these days, you’ll see a ton of pictures of teenagers that say to each other, “We should’ve stayed small forever! We were such little angels.”

 The important thing is to remember on this day our childhood and to fight for the rights of children in Costa Rica so that they will live and grow in a peaceful environment, with love around them, being educated and having the freedom that they deserve.

Enjoy your day, kids! Don’t eat too much candy!

Los pequeños de la casa están muy felices esperando con ansias una fecha muy especial, el 9 de setiembre, pues se celebra el Día del Niño y la Niña en Costa Rica. Asimismo más de un adulto, que tiene vivo a su “niño o niña interior”, también le gusta celebrar este día.

 En esta fecha tan especial, los centros educativos preparan un increíble día libre para los pequeños. Se organizan actividades culturales y recreativas en las que entre carcajadas, bailes, juegos y sonrisas ellos pueden compartir y lucirse en sus mejores galas. Y ¿sabe usted qué es lo mejor de este día? ¡Sí, las golosinas! ¡Los helados, las bolsitas de confites, el queque y mejor aún el regalo!

 Con un día así de tantos chineos y dulces, acaso ¿no le gustaría ser un niño o niña para toda la vida? ¡Pues, a mi sí! Y más claro está si usted revisa su perfil de Facebook en estas fechas, porque verá el montón de fotos de “güilas” que se dicen entre sí: “¡mejor nos hubiéramos quedado pequeños!” Éramos todos unos angelitos.

 Lo importante de esta fecha es que debemos celebrarla recordando nuestra niñez y como adultos velar por los derechos de los niños y niñas costarricenses. Para que vivan y crezcan en un ambiente de paz, amor, educación y libertad que merecen.

 ¡Feliz día güilas! No se abusen con los confites.

 

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!/ ¡Felíz Día de las Madres!

We can all agree that one day a year is not enough to express the love we have for our moms. And no gift that we choose can be great enough to perfectly honor the fact that our moms brought us into the world and have loved us for our entire lives.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are forever indebted to our mothers. That’s why every August 15th in Costa Rica we ask ourselves, and now what can I give my mom? We make a long list in our minds of possibilities on the market, which bombards us with options of different products that would obligate us to set aside a big chunk of our paycheck to finance the endeavor. Which is the best gift: perfume, a blouse, a purse, an electronic or maybe a massage?

Let’s stop for a moment and analyze the situation. They dedicate their lives to see us grow up and be happy, without ever needing to go to a store and buy “love” to give us. The best Mother’s Day gift is all of the love, respect, understanding and dedication that we can shower on them. A few more days of the year should be dedicated to recognize the value of our moms, but the best thing would be to celebrate our moms each of the  365 days of the year…just because they deserve it. 

I promise to love you and you’ll always have a place in my heart.

Todos estamos de acuerdo en que no basta un solo día al año para celebrar el gran amor que tenemos por nuestras mamás. Mucho menos, un regalo lo suficientemente grande o perfecto que iguale el hecho de habernos traído al mundo para amarnos para toda la vida.

 Sí damas y caballeros, estamos en deuda con nuestras mamás. Por algo cada 15 de agosto caemos en la gran duda de, ¿y ahora que le regalo a mi mamá? Hacemos un listado en la cabeza de las diferentes opciones que nos ofrece el mercado, quien nos bombardea con diferentes opciones de productos, que a menudo nos obligan a dejar buena parte de la quincena en estos negocios. ¿Qué es mejor regalo: un perfume, una blusa, un bolso, algún electrodoméstico o talvez un masaje?

Debemos hacer un alto y analizar bien la situación. Ellas dedican su vida para vernos crecer y ser felices, sin necesidad de ir a una tienda y comprar “amor” para darnos. El mejor regalo del día de las madres es el amor, el respeto, la comprensión, y la dedicación que podamos brindarles. Deberían existir un par de días más en los que se les reconozca su valor, pero lo mejor sería que la celebración se llevara a cabo cada uno de los 365 del año… solo porque ellas se lo merecen.

 Prometo amarte y llevarte siempre en mi corazón.

ISA Word Surfing Games Costa Rica 2016

Because of its beautiful Central Pacific beaches, Costa Rica has been selected for the second time to host the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games. This is event is happening on breathtaking Jaco Beach, whose incredible waves and exuberant beauty attract thousands of tourists and surf fans alike.

Costa Rica will be represented by many impressive surfers, including the McGonagle brothers, Muñoz brothers, Torres brothers, Vindas brothers, Anthony Fillingim and Alberto Muñoz. In addition to the honor of hosting the competition, the reigning champion of the ISA World Surfing Games 2015 (which occurred in Nicaragua), is Costarican Noe Mar McGonagle, who is ready to continue defending his title on national territory.

We send our best wishes of good luck to all of the participants and hope that event contributes to the development of the surrounding Jaco community and allows visitors from all over the world to fall in love with the enchanting nature found in Puntarenas province.

Por sus hermosas playas del Pacífico Central, Costa Rica ha sido seleccionada por segunda vez, como sede del Mundial de Surf de la International Surfing Association (ISA). Este evento se está llevando a cabo en la hermosa Playa de Jaco, donde su increíble oleaje y exuberante belleza, atrae a miles de turistas y amantes del surf a practicar este deporte.

Costa Rica cuenta con la representación de increíbles surfistas como: los hermanos McGonagle, Muñoz, Torres, Vindas, Anthony Fillingim y Alberto Muñoz. Además del honor de ser sede, el actual campeón del Mundial de Surf ISA 2015 efectuado en Nicaragua, es el costarricense Noe Mar McGonagle, quien está listo para continuar defendiendo su título en territorio nacional.

Pilgrimage: a faith tradition, full of fulfilled promises / Romería: Una Tradición de fe, llena de promesas cumplidas.

Doing a pilgrimage is one of the most emblematic traditions of Costa Rican Catholics and an established cultural manifestation in our country. This takes place on August 2 and it is estimated that about two million people from different parts of our national territory travel on foot, bicycle, or others means of transportation toward the Church of Cartago, the home of the Virgin of Los Ángeles.

According to the legend, on August 2, 1635, a humble young girl named Juana Pereira left her house in search of firewood for cooking. Suddenly, she came upon a small doll made of stone that was carrying a baby in its arms and lying over a stream of water. The girl, happy to have found it, picked it up and brought it to her house.

The next day she found the same little doll in the same place, and the one that she had in her house was no longer there. That happened on so many occasions that, startled, she decided to turn it into the parish priest. The priest witnessed the same phenomenon of the doll disappearing and then appearing again on the stream of water.

They drew the conclusion that it was a sign from God that this was the place that a church should be built in honor of the Virgen of Los Angeles.

On September 24, 1824, by a decree from the highest authorities of the country, the Virgin of Los Ángeles was declared the patroness of Costa Rica, and August 2 nd is now one of the most celebrated dates nationwide. It is an event of faith that moves masses of parishioners with hearts full of faith and love, be it to request a miracle from the loving mother, give thanks for prayers answered, or just to visit her on her day.

La Romería es una de las tradiciones más emblemáticas de la población católica costarricense y una sólida manifestación cultural en nuestro país. Esta se lleva a cabo el 2 de agosto y se estima que alrededor de 2 millones de habitantes de diferentes partes del territorio nacional viajan a pie, en bicicleta u otros medios de transporte hacia la Basílica de Cartago, hogar de la Virgen de los Ángeles.

Cuenta la historia que el 2 de agosto de 1635, una joven humilde llamada Juana Pereira salió a buscar leña para cocinar. Cuando de pronto, se encontró una pequeña “muñeca” hecha de piedra que cargaba un bebé en brazos y que yacía sobre una naciente de agua. La niña muy contenta la tomó y se la llevó acasa.

Al día siguiente se encontró la misma “muñequita” en el mismo lugar y la que tenía en la casa ya no estaba. Esto le sucedió en tantas ocasiones que, asustada, decidió entregársela al sacerdote del pueblo. Éste evidenció que la imagen desaparecía y se encontraba en el mismo lugar sobre la naciente de agua.

Esto se interpretó como señal de Dios que en ese lugar se debía construir la Ermita en honor a la Virgen de los Ángeles.

El 24 de setiembre de 1824, por decreto de las máximas autoridades gubernamentales del país, se declaró a la Virgen de los Ángeles como la Patrona de Costa Rica, y ahora el 2 de agosto es una de las fechas más celebradas a nivel nacional. Ahora es un evento de fe que mueve masas de feligreses con el corazón lleno de fe y amor, ya sea con el objetivo de solicitar un milagro de la madre amorosa, dar gracias por los favores cumplidos o solamente visitarle en su día.

Long live Guanacastan culture!/¡Vivamos la Guanacastequidad!

 

The month of July is a great celebration for everyone from the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. On July 25, 1824, the Nicoya Party, a political-administrative Spanish colony, which is now part of the province of Guanacaste, was annexed to the country of Costa Rica. The slogan of the annexation is “Of the Fatherland for our Own Will,” and that phrase is now part of the district’s crest.

But, what is the symbolic meaning of this date? Guanacaste added to Costa Rica a great variety of culture and traditions that include music, dances, foods, sayings and customs, as well as economic pursuits such as agriculture and the cattle industry, rich soil, majestic rivers and beautiful beaches. This marvelous gift is the “Guanacastecan culture” that identifies the Guanacastecan person before the world and makes us unique in our own country.

That is why we invite you to get to know Guanacastecan culture during this month of July so you can soak in the rich traditions of this land, fall in love with the Costa Rican culture and practice your Spanish in the most colonial and small-town Guanacastecan way.

“Bombas”

or bombs, are riddles that locals ramble off in competions at festivals. They are many times a rime and are spoken so quickly, it’s hard to catch each word. They are said in a joking and happy way, to celebrate a special date or activity, to serenade, to challenge an opponent or just to be silly. Here are two transcribed poems, but they do not rhyme in the English version.

The orange was born green and time made it ripen;

My heart was born free but yours imprisoned it.

El mes de Julio es de gran celebración para los guanacastecos. Ya que un 25 de julio de 1824 el Partido de Nicoya (actual provincia de Guanacaste) decidió anexarse al país de Costa Rica. “De la Patria por Nuestra Voluntad”

Pero ¿Cuál es el significado simbólico de esta fecha? Guanacaste otorgó a Costa Rica una gran variedad de cultura y tradiciones que se traduce a música, bailes, comidas, dichos y costumbres. Además de actividades económicas como la agricultura y ganadería, ricos suelos, majestuosos ríos y hermosas playas.

Ese regalo maravilloso es la “Guanacastequidad” lo que identifica al pueblo guanacasteco ante el mundo y nos hace únicos inclusive en nuestro propio país.

Por lo que le invitamos a conocer la Guanacastequidad durante este mes de Julio y que usted se empape de las ricas tradiciones de esta tierra, se enamore de ella y practique español de la forma más coloquial del pueblo guanacasteco y de la cultura de Costa Rica.

Happy Fathers Day/ Felíz Día del Padre

In Costa Rica, as in many countries, Father’s Day was celebrated this past Sunday, June 19. In Costarican culture, this day is celebrated in a ceremony among family where multiple generations get together to share a special dinner.

Along with presents and hugs, the family tells stories that showcase their father’s greatness. These anecdotes include all of the “firsts”: first diaper change, first time teaching us to ride a bike without training wheels, and taking us to our first day of kindergarten. Jokingly we recall story after story from when we were little and Dad made the day.

Even though we grow up to be adults, every step we take in life is as if we were taking the first. Let’s go champ! Let’s go princess! You can do it, keep going! They are words of love, support and motivation that give us strength along the way.

Thank you to all the fathers for your wise words, corrections and lessons that you give us, for the smiles and tears that we have lived together and most of all, for the unconditional love.

En Costa Rica como en muchos países se celebra el Día del Padre este domingo 19 de Junio. En la cultura costarricense este día se celebra en una ceremonia familiar donde generaciones se reúnen para compartir una cena familiar.

Entre regalos y abrazos se comparten pequeñas historias donde la experiencia paterna sale a relucir. Esas anécdotas de padres primerizos que se las ingeniaban para cambiar un pañal, cuando nos enseñaron a conducir una bicicleta sin “rueditas” o cuando nos acompañaron a nuestro primer día de clases. Son un sin fin de historias de cuando éramos pequeños que entre carcajadas son recordadas.

Y a pesar de que crezcamos hasta ser adultos, para ellos cada paso que damos en la vida es como cuando dimos los primeros. ¡Vamos campeón!, ¡Vamos princesa!, ¡Usted puede, siga adelante! Son las palabras de amor, soporte y aliento que nos respaldan en nuestro camino.

Gracias papás por las sabias palabras, las correcciones y enseñanzas que nos dan, por las sonrisas y el llantos que vivimos juntos(as) y sobre todo, por el amor incondicional.

ESTELAR VIAJES: Río Celeste and the Llano Cortés Waterfall/Río Celeste y Cataratas de Llano Cortés.

32 students and community members took part in this month’s excursion. Travelers enjoyed the beauty of the magical Rio Celeste, located in the outskirts of the Tenorio Volcano.

At 7am the group anxiously started their journey to the Tenorio Volcano National Park. After arriving in the town of Bijagua, the scenery had already changed a lot. Green mountains and fields with an abundance of vegetation welcomed the travelers to the area. The group checked in at the national park and started making their way towards the river.

The long but pleasant walk ended with a great view of the marvelous Rio Celeste waterfall. The overwhelming beauty filled the hearts of the travelers who, after trekking through mud trails at an altitude of 1092 meters, had a chance to see the expanse of the incredible Rio Celeste.

After the journey through the national park, the group headed towards the Llano Cortes waterfall to cool off. While Costa Rica is a small country, it’s full of wonderfully beautiful hidden places. The goal of Estelar Viajes is to allow our travelers to enjoy these places while participating in a cultural exchange.

Una excursión de 32 personas con estudiantes y miembros de nuestra comunidad, disfrutaron de la exuberante belleza que ofrece el mágico Río Celeste ubicado en las faldas del Volcán Tenorio.

A las 7 am con muchas ansias, partieron rumbo al Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio. Al llegar a la zona de Bijagua, el panorama era diferente. Montañas de verdes pastos y abundante vegetación, le brindaron la bienvenida a los excursionista quienes se abrieron paso en el Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio por el sendero en busca del río.

Una larga pero placentera caminata les permitió llegar a la catarata del maravilloso Río Celeste, ¡un escenario impactante y difícil de imaginar! El asombro y la alegría llenaron los corazones de los exploradores, quienes al ver ese paisaje y recorrer senderos de lodo, en una altura de 1092 mts, pudieron ver la longitud de este majestuoso Río Celeste.

Al finalizar el recorrido en el Parque Nacional, partieron a Llano Cortés para refrescarse en la Catarata. Costa Rica es un terreno pequeño que esconde lugares mágicos inimaginables y el objetivos de Estelar Viajes es que usted pueda disfrutarlos en un intercambio cultural de idiomas entre estudiantes.

World Press Freedom Day/Día Mundial de la Libertad de Expresión.

On May 3rd, 1993, The United Nations declared World Press Freedom Day. It’s a day that commemorates and celebrates the freedom of speech and free press and the right to ethical, responsible information from the media regarding political, social, and economic topics.

Freedom of press is not a privilege in many countries around the world. Many people who are passionate about revealing the truth about corruption and living conditions in different countries have lost their lives trying to bring the truth to light.

In spite of the United Nations constant attempts, the fight for the fundamental rights to information, protection from censured information, excessive media surveillance, and secure internet journalism continues. These are all topics that the UN hopes to focus on and improve in 2016

We should value and appreciate our rights, and celebrate this day in hopes that freedom of press is made possible in all countries. Ethical and responsible communication has allowed many towns to avoid oppression from corrupt political groups and become sovereign governments.

Un 3 de mayo de 1993 se declaró esta fecha como el Día Mundial de la Libertad de Expresión por las Naciones Unidas. Una fecha que conmemora y celebra la libertad de comunicarse por medio verbal o de prensa de forma libre y el derecho a la información ética y responsable de los medios de comunicación en temas, políticos, sociales, económicos y otros.

La libertad de expresión no es un privilegio en muchos países alrededor del mundo. Muchos comunicadores apasionados por dejar ver la realidad de corrupción que muchos viven personas en diferentes naciones han perdido la vida dejando un legado que muchas veces no pudo salir a la luz.

A pesar de los constantes esfuerzos de las Naciones Unidas, aun se sigo luchando por el derecho fundamental a la información, la protección de la información ante la censura y vigilancia excesiva, la seguridad del periodismo en Internet y fuera de esta. Objetivos que se esperan alcanzar en el transcurso de este año 2016.

Debemos hacer valer nuestro derecho y celebrar este día como un objetivo que la humanidad espera alcanzar en un futuro. La comunicación ética y responsable a permitido a muchos pueblos salir de la opresión de grupos políticos corruptos y ser gobiernos soberanos hoy día.

Earth Day/Día de la Tierra

Have you ever asked yourself what the word home means to you? Most people would say it’s a space shared with loved ones where love, safety, tranquility, and basic needs are satisfied.

Now that you’ve thought about it, you understand the tangible and intangible value that your home has. How would you like it if someone came and started destroying your home little by little, right under your nose? Of course you wouldn’t! So why do we allow our planet, our home, to be destroyed every day?

Earth is more than just a giant floating rock in our solar system. In fact, when you think about it, it’s even better than a five-star hotel. We have incredible oceans to explore, mountain ranges to climb, natural beauty to discover, rivers with water clean enough to drink, and more than enough food to share. On this Earth Day we should rethink how we take care of our home. We shouldn’t allow ourselves or others to cause more harm or to ignore what is happening all around us.

It is our responsibility to maintain the precious balance of natural resources. We know that they are being misused, and each day we are left with less and less. Earth has suffered unimaginable damages during its existence, and humans are contributing to the deterioration. Every time you witness mistreatment of our planet, think again about what home means to you. Be responsible. Save our water, air, animals, and green areas. Volunteer, plant a tree, recycle, and leave an impression.

We must work together to preserve our only home!

¿Alguna vez te haz preguntado lo que significa para ti la palabra hogar? Se puede decir; que es el espacio compartido con tus seres queridos donde habitan en un ambiente de amor, seguridad, tranquilidad y puedes satisfacer tus necesidades básicas.

Ahora que lo haz hecho, sabes muy bien el valor tangible e intangible que tiene tu hogar. ¿Te gustaría que alguien viniera y lo destruyera poco a poco delante de tus narices? ¡claro que no!. Entonces, ¿porque permites que todos los días dañen nuestro planeta, nuestro hogar?

La Tierra no es solo una roca gigante que flota en el sistema solar, está más equipado que un hotel 5 estrellas. Tenemos increíbles océanos para navegar, monumentales cordilleras de montañas para escalar, exuberante riqueza natural para descubrir, ríos con agua para beber y suficiente alimento para compartir. Hoy en el día de la Tierra debemos analizar como lo cuidamos. No debemos permitirnos hacerle más daño o ser egoístas e ignorantes y dejar pasar lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor.

Es nuestra responsabilidad mantener el equilibrio adecuado de sus recursos, sabemos muy bien que están siendo mal usados y cada día hay menos. La tierra ha sufrido inimaginables daños durante su existencia y los seres humanos somos los que la estamos acabando. Cada vez que sea testigo de un acontecimiento que dañe nuestro planeta analiza nuevamente la palabra hogar. Sé responsable, cuida de su agua, de su aire, sus animales y áreas verdes. Sé voluntario, siembra un árbol, recicla y deja una huella.
